Lots of people showed up and a good time was had by all. Many hamburgers and hotdogs were eaten. Designated drivers were assigned and large quantities of liquid refreshment were consumed. Churned strawberry ice cream was enjoyed in the afternoon. There wasn't much left (thank God)! Leftovers A stupid game called "Oodles" was played - men against women - to a draw. It made fools out of everyone. Much hand wringing and mental pain was experienced by all. I gave explicit instructions to burn the darn thing after we finished up.
The thought of the holiday wasn't lost or forgotten in the festivities. There was a Desert Storm veteran as well as myself (Vietnam veteran) and we spread a few war stories around. We talked about helicopters and ships and buddies who made it and those who didn't. We talked about drinking and almost getting into trouble. We talked about being shot at and being missed; jumping out of airplanes and such. It was amazing how the generation gap was bridged. The evening was topped off with calls to family and friends and a movie called Big Joe Black. No one had to work on Tuesday so we hung around and drank beer into the wee hours of the morning. Why did I promise people I'd have this web page up and running this morning! The only thing that would have made it better is if my friend Mike Pearl could have been here.
Has anyone ever seen a Christmas cactus blooming on Memorial Day?
